Two weeks ago I received a phone call while at work from some stranger saying that he had my husky. He said that Jonah came walking up to him and started kissing him but "the other dog" ran away. The other dog in question? Ruby, my goofy yet scary looking 85 pound German Shepard who NEVER runs away. You know what else she doesn't do? Approach strangers. So when faced with the decision to do one or the other, she decided to high-tail it out of there and go on the lam. She was surprisingly good at it. Stealthy like a fucking ninja.
Did I mention she didn't have a collar on because we had brushed her the day before?
I immediately called Jay and he went and got Jonah and then spent the next two hours trying to find Ruby but she had disappeared. Throughout that day several of our friends and family members came over and drove around trying to find her but nobody even caught sight of her. When I got home I drove around until dark with no luck. I was devastated that night when I had to go to sleep with her not home. I was scared because if she wondered far enough in any direction, she would run into very busy streets.
The next day we put up signs all over the neighborhood. Jay said that a lady saw her in our yard but the lady didn't realize this was our house (but she had seen the signs and knew Ruby was lost) and when she tried to approach Ruby, Ruby growled and ran away. At 5pm a lady called me and told me that on the first night she was missing, Ruby had wondered into the parking lot of a small area business and that the owners had closed the fence when they left so that Ruby wouldn't wonder away and get hit. They had left her food and water, unfortunately, she had wondered away from there the following morning.
I went over to that business to see if she had wondered back over there but she hadn't. I was so freaked out and starting to wonder if I would ever find her. Right then my phone rang and it was Jay's best friend Jason, telling me he had found her hiding behind a shed in the neighbor's yard. She had hurt her leg and had a cut on her toe but she was home safe and sound.
When I walked into the house, she rolled over so I could rub her belly and she started to whine/doggie cry. Awww. Her collar is now firmly around her neck.
This guy is a handful:
On Monday I let Jonah inside after he had been out for about 40 minutes and I noticed that he wouldn't move out of the spot he had sat in when he first came inside. And this was not his usual spot and he was sitting up right instead of laying lazily about. So I called him over and he came over VERY slowly. This dog is not a slow mover, as a matter of facter he's either gliding around so smoothly you would think his paws weren't touching the ground or he's jumping around like I coated his food with Red Bull.
He very slowly climbed up on the couch next to me and promptly went to sleep and slept for a few hours. When he woke up I touched his paws because usually dogs won't let you touch their paws if they are hurt, which is actually how you tell they are hurt. But he let me touch his paws.
So I said, "Jonah, wanna go outside?"
And he jumped up off the couch and then let out the loudest scream (yes, scream) I have ever heard a dog make and he immediately crumbled to the floor. And because I am practicing to being the mother to actual human babies, I FREAKED out. I was just positive he had snapped a hip, fractured a vertebrea or something. I laid on the floor with him for a while and he tried to get up one more time and yelled again. I called the husband and told him that something was wrong with our second oldest kid and that there may be a very expensive visit to the vet ER and that we will probably have to leave a kidney there.
So the husband comes home a few minutes later and when he walked in the door and Jonah, who usually humps the air when Jay is around, didn't even lift his head. He dropped his keys on the wooden floors and still, nothing. Jay came over and sat down next to me and we loved on Jonah for a while, felt on his hips and legs but he didn't give me any indication of what was hurting him.
A few minutes later, we decided we had to take him outside one more time before bed and thought we were going to have to carry him. However, as soon as he heard the word "out" he jumped up like his ass was burning like a Salem witch and ran to the door. When I opened it he ran outside and leaped off the back deck and ran into the yard like a gold metalist. My husband looked at me and shook his head like he knew I was just blowing the whole thing out of proportion the whole time.
I think Jonah did it on purpose because he is planning over staging a revolution and taking over the house. The first step must be making the female owner look like a crazy person and trying to get her to give up her kidneys to pay for unnecessary medical treatment.
Thanks Mr. Jones.
I was reading this entry today, and the blogger was talking about how she has two animals that have transformed her ideas of love. She wanted people to show her their love transformers, so I made this collage of my little babies.
They brighten all my days.
On Sunday morning after the party, I was getting some stuff together to send home with my Dad. We went out the front door and around the side of my house so I could give him some of the left over soda to take home. As we were emptying out coolers, I heard Mable (my chihuahua) yelping and kind of screeching. I didn't even know she was outside, she had snuck out when we went out the door.
I ran around the front of the house and saw her limping in my neighbor's yard, which is on the corner. When I got to her, her front paws were curled up and she was hunched to one side and couldn't look directly at me. I thought for sure she had been hit by a car and had some sort of internal bleeding. I ran and got Jay and we wrapped her in a towel and got in the car to take her to the animal ER. As we are driving there, she just snapped out of it. It was so strange. She's totally fine now.
My Dad says that he saw a truck drive by and he thinks that maybe the truck drove OVER her without touching her since she's so small. I think either that or maybe a rock flew out from the road when the truck drove by and hit her or something strange. Either way, we are being extra cautious when we walk outside so that she doesn't sneak outside. I'm really glad she's okay. I would have been so sad if something had happened to her.
This is Barnabus the Big, more commonly referred to as Biggie, or Big, or Big-Son. Biggie is OLD!
A few years ago he was found wondering around near my college campus by a couple that was getting ready to move from their apartment. They tried to find his real owners, even put an ad in the paper but the owners never claimed him. So we took him in.
When they first gave him to us they told us he was a girl, so we named him Laya. For a year we thought he was a grumpy old lady cat. Then he started peeing on the kitchen floor, so I took him to the vet. I thought he had a urinary tract infection. Looking back on it, I think he just couldn’t take anymore emasculation.
So I was at the vet and they took him in the back to check his “lady” parts. They promptly brought him back and told me “she” wasn’t having any urinary tract issues but “she” did in fact have a penis infection because “she” was a neutered male. They said with his long crazy hair and the lack of, well, balls, they could understand the mistake. I didn’t feel that bad because someone handed me the cat and said he was a girl, and I’m not the kind of pet owner that stares at my cat’s personal business.
Anyway, that is how his name got changed, his penis got uninfected and he stopped peeing in the kitchen. The vet also told us that he could be between 15-17 years old.
Biggie enjoys sleeping ALL day (sometimes face down), roaming around aimlessly, letting out the strangest late night meow you’ve ever heard (sounds a lot like he’s being strangled) and occasionally biting people who pet him too long.
Biggie also enjoys a good cuddle.
He is also a large fan of Christmas.
Biggie has a kidney condition now, so I'm not sure how much longer he'll be here but so far, he's trucking right along.
**The only thing not real in that photo is the candy cane. We photoshopped that in but his paw was really like that and he was really wearing that.**
I don't want to be one of those crazy people who always writes about her pets, but I have seven and they are hilarious.
So today was the first snow of the season. We got 2 inches, which of course made everyone drive like assholes. Before I had to get on the road though, I went out in the backyard with the dogs because they love snow. Here are two of them. The first is Ruby who I have not posted about before. She's my German Shepard and I adore this dog. I love to cuddle with her b/c sometimes she lets me use her as a pillow. She's my protector. One time she thought someone was trying to break in the house (it was really the hubby fumbling with keys) and she got up on the bed and laid across me in this very alert position and let out this low steady growl. When she's not being all Cujo, she's a big goof letting out groans when we annoy her and chasing the chihuahua around the house b/c the Chihuahua is kinda of an antagonizer. Also, if I take a nap, she is always in the room with me. Jay can be in the other room with steak but if I am napping, so is she.
Here's my "Happy Husk" Jonah. Jonah is never happier than when it snows, that whole husky and the snow thing is no myth. He goes outside and prances all around and lets out these adorable howls. He's howling in this picture.
Mable (the chihuahua) was out there two but I didn't get a picture of her because she was very unhappy. She was wearing her little black and red fleece coat b/c she only weighs seven pounds and a lady needs to be warm. She gave me the evil eye when I put her out there, like "Bitch you must be kidding."
This is Mable, the world's best and least yippy chihuahua.
She is about three years old. She enjoys taunting our German Shepard into chasing her, cuddling, chasing the cats, sleeping on pillows, walks, hanging out in the front yard without a chain and stealing cat food.
Jay and I were never really into the whole concept of dressing our dog and then one of his friends bought a dachson and then bought it some clothes. The dachson grew out of those clothes and what else could they do with them but give them to closest chihuahua? Then we realized that the little sweater was actually very good for her in the winter when it was zero degrees. She loved it. So that's the only clothes we usually subject her to...
UNTIL I was in Taret yesterday and saw this little Halloween costume...and since she does go with us when we take the niece and nephew and my little brother trick or treating I bought it! ...And ummm...I don't think she likes it.
What do you think?
This is my 5-year-old Siberian Husky Jonah. Well he's doing to be 5 in December. Jonah enjoys leaping from the loveseat to the couch in one single bound, chew bones, eating tennis balls, eating birds, smuggling those birds into the house and dropping them on the new rug for Mommy to find, refusing to go into the yard if its raining and therefore pooping and peeing on the deck, going for long walks and peeing in all the yards without actually stopping and standing still, spooning on Mommy's bed, howling and talking. He also enjoys sleeping on his back with all four paws way up in the air while showing his teeth.
Jonah is one of the seven furry happy thoughts that live in my house. I thought I would share one of my favorite living creatures with you guys.
